Earlier this week the City of Toronto started using a “Pedestrian Priority” system for controlling the lights at one of the busiest intersections in the city. Basically there’s a period of time when all of the traffic signals are red, allowing pedestrians to cross the intersection diagonally (read this article for a better, more thoroguh explanation). I think this is a fantastic idea and hope that other cities start to adopt it (Toronto has plans to expand it to other intersections if it’s successful – I guess that means if no one gets seriously hurt).
