Ellen Degeneres is ticked off at California voters. Well, not quite. She’s ticked off at the voters who had the gall to support the constitutional ban on gay marriage. She isn’t ticked off at those who voted for Barack Obama.

If Ms. Degeneres had bothered to stop and think for a moment before opening her mouth, she would have seen that at least some of the people who supported the ban also supported Obama. How does she feel about those people?

What? You think I’m making that up? According to the California Secretary of State 6,308,161 (or 61% of voters) supported Barack Obama and 5,387,939 (or 52.5% of voters) supported the ban on gay marriage. It seems reasonable to assume that SOME of those 5.3 million votes in favour of the ban also voted for Barack Obama (McCain received 3,849,431 [37.2%] votes so it’s not likely that the only people to support the ban were McCain supporters.

I don’t even know what to say about this article. Maybe I’ll have something later.

  1. There are other legal tacks that are being discussed to get the proposition overturned, too. Like that since it was a constitutional amendment that contradicted a previous Supreme Court ruling, it needed to pass by a larger margin.

What flummoxes me is how 52 – 48 is a “decisive” victory for Prop 2 here, and “too narrow” for Prop 8 there.

I guess I need to take more of that New Math.

  3. Oh, and 52 – 48 was just fine for the Proposition (that was defeated) calling for parental notification …
